Art Basics
In this course, the energy, curiosity and excitement of childhood are captured through visual discovery. Collage, assemblage, printmaking, drawing, painting, and 3-D art are explored in a joyful, creative environment. Art fundamentals are taught to older children. Please bring a smock.

• Family Studio Art
Creative connections are explored by parents and children working side-by-side to make art. This course helps children recognize their own talents and tap into their artistic abilities. Learning the fundamentals of art, students will explore various mediums and tools, learn how to draw and paint and create 2-D and 3-D art while developing an artistic vocabulary. A parent or caretaker is required to attend classes. Please bring a smock.

• Clay Studio
Students will learn the basics of ceramics, including the fundamentals of firing and glazing, with an emphasis on individual creative use of clay to produce colorful sculpture. Both the art and craft are explored as children create colorful objects such as treasure boxes, personalized cups and other items. Please bring a smock.

• Advanced Painting Techniques
This advanced painting course is designed for students who are interested in exploring painting techniques using watercolor, acrylic and oil paints. While developing their painting skills, students will learn the basics of color, form, value, texture and space while becoming acquainted with different paint mediums. Exploration of techniques and color mixing will be introduced in the beginning weeks of the course and subject matter includes still life, landscape and abstraction. Attention will be given to individual instruction within a supportive group setting.

• Ceramics for Pre-Teens
The basics of ceramics, progressing to more advanced techniques, are taught in this class for pre-teens. Functional items and art objects will be created. Firing, glazing, the use of slips, slab, coil and throwing are all covered in this comprehensive course. Please bring a smock.

• Drawing and Painting for Teens
For students who are interested in improving their skills, this class will focus on the human figure, anatomy and still life. Students may hone their style and technique working in pencil, charcoal, pastels, watercolor and acrylic paint on paper and canvas. Please bring a smock.

• Drafting
This course is ideal for students interested in architecture or set design. Students who enjoy constructing objects by hand will gain insight into how architects and designers bring sketches of buildings, furniture, bridges and landscapes to life, from concept to completed model. Students will learn how to create miniature sets, furniture or building models, and more. The
semester will conclude with an exhibition of finished blueprints and 3-D models.

• Printmaking
Printmaking is an exciting form of art. In this class students learn to print imagery and logos on Styrofoam and rubber blocks. They will have the opportunity to create positive and negative prints of their drawings and print them onto paper or fabric on a cold press. Through printmaking students can learn how newspapers came about as well as the images that are silk-screened onto their hats, t-shirts, fabrics and more. In this class the students will print images on textured paper, fabrics and other materials.

• Fine Arts
This class examines traditional styles of painting through studying and creating works in oil and watercolor paints. Students will critique paintings created in these mediums spanning various eras, while learning the techniques and mechanics of these art forms. The Fine Arts class will open
the students mind to exploring their potential to work in these particular areas. Please bring a smock.

• Mixed Media Workshop
Exclusively for teens, this course offers an introduction to painting and drawing, while developing and sharpening existing skills. Using a variety of traditional and non-traditional art materials and innovative techniques, students create their visions on canvas, paper or other supports, exploring exciting mixed media techniques. Please bring a smock.

• Camera Antics - An Intro to Photography
This basic photography class introduces students to 35mm camera and darkroom techniques, including processing black and white film. An exhibition of student work is displayed at the end of the course, showcasing creative expressions. Please note that chemicals used to process film may aggravate asthmatic conditions.

• Advanced Photo/Darkroom Techniques
Students who are interested in portfolio development and pursuing photography as a major will have the opportunity to create independent work combining traditional photography, digital photography and graphic design techniques. Using Photoshop software, the students will compose digital images on a computer and manipulate and enhance their features. Students must schedule a portfolio review for acceptance.

• Toons I
Traditional cartooning styles taught in this class for pre-teens include an introduction to scale/line drawings, shading, color and background design and special effect drawing techniques. Students will create storyboards,
mini-comic book art, illustrations and more. A sketchpad is required for weekly exercises and homework.

• Toons II
Students previously enrolled in Toons I will have the opportunity to create animated characters and backgrounds and learn how to design and color the images digitally. Creating original works, they will scan drawings and color them as well as learn how to use a mouse or Wacom Tablet tool to draw images directly on a computer and create professionally colored prints. Software will include Photoshop, Illustrator and 3-D Studio Max. Prerequisite: Toons I.

• Computer Kids
Is your child interested in art and curious about computers? This course introduces youngsters to the world of computer art. Students learn how to use Photoshop and Illustrator to resize, cut and paste images, design and arrange shapes and pictures, create holiday cards and more.

Basic design techniques will be taught and students will be introduced to a variety of graphic design software programs. Students will gain a working knowledge of file formats, text design and how to merge imagery with graphics. Students will also learn how to design and create websites using
Photoshop, Dreamweaver and Flash.

This introductory course is for students with limited digital art experience. Students will learn how to use a Mac computer and explore creative software such as Photoshop, Illustrator and Painter. They will learn how utilize a scanner to transfer their 2-D illustrations from hard copy to digital
format, and design flyers, posters, calendar, menus and programs.

• Film Theory
This course will engage students in an examination of the cultural, historical and theoretical dimensions of film practice. Students will examine film as a discourse through scrutiny of a range of film text and will explore the social,
political and ideological dimensions of film use.

• Digital Photography and Techniques
In this course, students will familiarize themselves with various aspects of digital photography. First, an overview of the function of digital cameras will be discussed. Using industry standard software, they will scan materials,
manipulate images and create layouts. Each semester, the students will execute their assignments utilizing their digital skills as they prepare their work for print or web formats.

• Introduction to Filmmaking – Fall Only
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the exciting world of digital video. Students learn the theories and techniques involved in the pre-production, production and post-production processes. In particular, the course focuses on storytelling and creating storyboards, lighting and exposure, focus, cinematography, audio, basic editing and outputting videos to DVD. Students will receive handson instruction with digital cameras and learn the basics of editing with Final Cut Pro. Students will write, direct, shoot and edit their own public service announcements and music videos as well as produce one 5–7 minute short narrative film or experimental video piece. Field trips to the Sony Wonder Technology Lab and the American Museum of the Moving Image form part of this course. Students will also
attend special screenings where guest artists engage the students in dialogue through Q & A sessions.

• Intermediate Filmmaking – Spring Only
This course immerses students in more advanced film techniques and theory, focusing on scriptwriting, creating storyboards, character development, advanced lighting, advanced cinematography, shooting for continuity, advanced audio techniques, editing and outputting videos to DVD. Students will receive hands-on instruction with digital cameras and learn more advanced editing skills, including subtitling, motion graphics and effects with Final Cut Pro. Students will write, direct, shoot and edit their own biographies, short films and documentaries for their peers and instructor to critique. The semester culminates with the HSA Youth Video/Film Festival, where students have a chance to showcase their works before a live audience. Students will attend film festivals in the New York City area during the spring and attend special screenings where guest artists engage the students in dialogue through Q & A sessions.

• Photography for Adults
Have you always loved taking pictures and wished you could learn how to do so professionally? This course teaches would-be photographers how to use their own 35mm camera, focusing on fundamental aspects such as its history, design, use and the study of light as well as film processing and development. Students will also learn how different grades of paper affect the presentation of an image. Students will participate in offsite field trips and independent photo shoots and conclude the semester with a photo presentation.
