Theater Department Faculty

Michael Early, Director of the Theater Program, has been working as a Guest Faculty member at Sarah Lawrence College since 1998. He is also the founder and producer of Phoenix Rising Productions. His experience in acting, industrial training films, commercials, print advertisements, theater, and directing is extensive. Michael holds an M.F.A. from Yale University's
School of Drama, a B.F.A. from NYU and a British American Drama Academy
Certificate.
Calandra Hackney attended The University of North Carolina at Greensboro as an undergraduate and received her MFA in Theatre Education from Roosevelt University in Chicago. Her acting credits include American Girl in New York, Looking Glass Theatre in Chicago and Stages Festival in Chicago. Calandra taught in pre-school and high school in the North Carolina public school system and taught theatre and musical theatre at The Skokie Park District in Chicago. She is a member of ATHA (Association for Theatre in Higher Education) and BTN (Black Theatre Network).

Ty Jones broadway debut was as Lt. Byers in Judgment at Nuremberg. He has performed in the Tony Award-winning production of Henry IV with Ethan Hawke and Kevin Kline, Julius Caesar, with Denzel Washington, Macbeth (Audelco Nomination Best Actor), Ain’t Supposed to Die a Natural Death (Audelco Nomination Best Supporting Actor in a Musical) and Hamlet with American Shakespeare Theatre Company. His lead roles have included Menelaus in Trojan Women (Audelco Nomination Best Supporting Actor), Paul in Six Degrees of Separation at Baltimore Center Stage/MSC, Cory in Fences at The Guthrie; and Young Faust in Faust with Classic Stage Co./TMT. Film credits include: Heaven’s Fall with Timothy Hutton and Anthony Mackie, Kiss it up to God (Winner at Cannes, Urbanworld,
Imagenation and First Run Film Festivals).

Mr. Jones’ screenplay Emancipation, based on the 1831 Nat Turner Rebellion, was selected as a Sundance Feature Film Institute Finalist and San Francisco Black Film Festival Winner. He received his BFA and MFA degrees from the University of Delaware where he was also a recipient of the Presidential Citation for Outstanding Achievement Award. Mr. Jones won an OBIE award for his role as Archibald in the Classical Theatre of Harlem’s The Blacks: A Clown Show.

Amina Robinson earned undergraduate and MFA degrees at Temple University and appeared in the national tours of Little Shop of Horrors and Mamma Mia. She has appeared with The Williamstown Theatre Festival, Crumbs from the Table of Joy at Center Stage, Bristol Riverside Theatre, Philadelphia Theatre Company, the original musical Sparkle at The Freedom Theatre in Philadelphia with Walter Dallas and Romeo and Juliet with The Classical Theatre of Harlem. Television credits include “Just Right” on The Wire and Valery Miller on Law and Order. Ms. Robinson has taught Acting and Voice at Temple University, The Freedom Theatre, Theatre Circ, and was the head of the Theatre Department at Burn Brae Performing Arts Day Camp in Philadelphia.
Willie E. Teacher completed his MFA in acting from Brandeis University. Professional theater credits include Hamlet, Macbeth, Ain’t Supposed to Die a Natural Death, Funnyhouse of a Negro, Topdog/ Underdog, Antony and Cleopatra, The Comedy of Errors and Citizens of Harambe. Academic theater credits include King Lear, Don Quixote, Agamemnon and His Daughters, The Winter’s Tale and Scenes From an Execution. Television and film credits include Spike Lee’s He Got Game, HBO’s Oz, The Visiting with Nicole Kidman, Invincible with Mark Wahlberg and Greg Kenear, Sheena, The Steve Harvey Show and HBO’s Life Support. He is a member of SAG, AEA and AFTRA.
