Theater Courses for Children & Teens

• Creative Play
An exploration of voice, coordination and confidence building designed for our youngest actors using theater games and language-building exercises. Parents are strongly encouraged to participate in all classes.

Tuition: $260 for 14 weeks / $520 for 28 weeks
Materials Fee: $50 per semester
Ages 4–5: Saturday 9:00am–10:00am

Acting for the Beginner I, II, III
Basic acting technique, vocal projection, concentration and development of the student’s instrument (body) through theater games, improvisation and script work. Character creation and ensemble work are introduced through
rehearsal of scenes and plays. Scripted work and level of exercise work progress in accordance with age and reading ability from Levels I through III.

Tuition: $260 for 14 weeks / $520 for 28 weeks
Materials Fee: $50 per semester

Ages 6–7: Saturday 10:00am–11:00am

Ages 8–9 Saturday 11:00am–12:00pm

• Level III

• Teen Acting – Beginners
For the student with little or no acting experience, this introductory course includes vocal and physical exercises, improvisational scenes and ensemble work. Scene study and character analysis are covered in the second 14-week term. No audition is required.

Tuition: $260 for 14 weeks / $520 for 28 weeks
Materials Fee: $50 per semester
Ages 13 - 19: Saturday 2:30pm–4:00pm

• Musical Theater (28 Weeks)
Explore song and dance from the actor’s perspective. Learn how song and dance are employed in Musical Theater to express character, advance the plot, and tell a story. Students will either select or be assigned songs, both solos and company work. They will develop a musical cabaret and perform it publicly in a showcase at the end of the year.

Tuition: $260 for 14 weeks / $520 for 28 weeks
Materials Fee: $60 per semester
Ages 13–19: Monday 4:00pm–6:00pm

• Speech and Diction – Fall Only
This class employs a physical approach to training the actor in the use and awareness of speech, focusing on training the entire body to support strong diction and vocal projection. The mechanics of speech are explored in depth,
covering the importance of speech and diction in creating a character and analyzing dramatic writing. This course is for College Prep students. Other students may be admitted on the basis of an interview.

Tuition: $260/14 weeks

Ages 12–19: Saturday 2:00pm–4:00pm

• Playwriting – Fall Only
Students will create a performance-worthy dramatic work and learn about dramatic structure, creating characters, plot, conflict and dramatic action. Special emphasis will be placed on the creative voice and individuality of each student writer. This course is for College Prep students. Other students may be admitted on the basis of an interview.

• Physical Acting – Fall Only
Using dance and stage combat techniques, students will develop the ability to adapt physical movement to any character requirement. The goal of this class is to achieve an understanding of the underlying relationships of carriage, gesture and spatial relationships, and to develop strength, endurance, flexibility and articulation of the spine.

Tuition: $260 for 14 weeks
Materials Fee: $60 per semester
Ages 12–19: Saturday 4:00pm–6:00pm

• Shakespeare Performance Workshop – Spring Only
This course approaches the work of Shakespeare from the actor’s perspective, focusing on scene study and performance. Admission is by audition only. Students study the history and form of Elizabethan Drama, and analyze and rehearse scenes from Shakespeare’s plays. This course is
for College Prep students. Other students may be admitted on the basis of an interview.

• Directing Workshop– Spring Only
An intensive exploration of the work of the director, aimed at providing the theater student a greater understanding of the practical and creative demands of the stage director. Students break out into workshop units and rehearse scenes and short plays under the leadership of a student director.
Particular emphasis is placed on analyzing a script, identifying the primary ideas and conflicts of dramatic material and clearly articulating and coordinating all dramatic elements to express the playwright’s main themes. All students lead their own workshop unit and the class’ work is presented for an informal performance in the HSA Theater at the conclusion of the semester. This course is for College Prep students. Other students may be admitted on the basis of an interview.

• Advanced Acting
Students immerse themselves in the core work of the actor learning audition techniques, scene study, taking direction and by working within an ensemble, creating characters and analyzing scripts. Students are encouraged to identify their individual acting and rehearsal style, based on a disciplined use of script analysis, speech, playing actions and serving the play’s intentions. Admission is by audition.

Tuition: $260 for 14 weeks/$520 for 28 weeks

Ages 12–19: Saturday 4:30pm–6:00pm

Ensembles

The Harlem School of the arts offers two acting/production ensembles by audition only. Performances are held in the HSA Theater, a black-box, professional theater, adjacent to the main facility.

• Apprentice Ensemble
An acting company that emphasizes an advanced approach to creating theater through rehearsal and performance work. Apprentice Ensemble students are required to perform in at least one HSA stage production during the school year. Extra rehearsal time for performance component required. Admission is by audition only. Scholarships will be available
to qualified families..

Tuition: $260 for 14 weeks

Ages 13—14: Saturday 1:00pm–2:30pm

• Bridge Ensemble
An advanced class for the younger actor emphasizing creation of character, rehearsal and performance. Extra rehearsals for performance projects are a requirement. Admission is by audition only.

Tuition: $260 for 14 weeks
Materials Fee: $50 per semester
Ages 10–12: Saturday 12:00pm–1:00pm

Adult Open Enrollment
• Adult Acting
For beginners and those interested in exploring the work of the actor. This class will focus on scene study and monologues and will cover the basic work of the actor in terms of objectives, obstacles, creating a character and the character’s relation to the entire play.

Tuition: $260 for 14 weeks/$520 for 28 weeks
Materials Fee: $50 per semester
Class Time: Wednesday 6:00pm–8:00pm
