Acting has given Theatre Director Willie Teacher wonderful learning experiences, and the chance to perform in great works by William Shakespeare, Suzan Lori-Parks and Melvin
Van Peebles. Professional Theater credits include Hamlet, Macbeth, Classical Theatre of Harlem’s Funnyhouse of a Negro, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning, Topdog/Underdog.
Television & Film credits include Spike Lee’s He Got Game, HBO’s OZ, Invincible starring Mark Wahlberg and the HBO original film Life Support starring Queen Latifah. Mr.Teacher shares his passion for acting with the students of HSA.
HSA’s Theatre Department utilizes a traditional arts conservatory approach to prepare students for the demands of professional application, as well as provide a general understanding and appreciation for theatre. The Theatre Department refines and focuses the talent, commitment, and enthusiasm of youth ages 2-18 in a fun, nurturing environment; providing its students with a foundation to express, expand and explore their imaginations. Our HSA Prep Theatre students unite theory with practice by engaging in high-profile performance opportunities, including fully staged productions, auditions, and community events. Students and alumni of the department have been cast as principals in
Broadway’s The Lion King and American Idiot, as well as popular television shows, films and commercials. Graduates of the department are prepared to attend leading theatre
programs at top universities. The department is led by world-renowned teaching artists, who are also actors, directors, singers, performing artists and poets — all currently active in their respective fields of performance.
