Music Department
|
| HSA’s Music Program offers a broad curriculum of instruction in all orchestral instruments, piano, organ, guitar, African/Latin percussion and voice. The philosophy of the program is to prepare the individual to become a proficient performer and reader of Western music, as well as of the musical styles of the African Diaspora. To accomplish this goal, HSA requires all music students over the age of 8 to register for a theory/ear training class during each semester of their enrollment. |
For questions regarding the music program, please contact:

Classes are offered as Open Enrollment or through the sequential College Prep curriculum that will help prepare the students for advancement to the study of music at the university level.

A limited number of Merit Scholarships (ages 8–11) and College Prep Scholarships (ages 12–18) are available to students who demonstrate
exceptional ability and pass the annual audition. Since standards are
extremely high, we first encourage the student’s private teacher to recommend him or her for the audition.

The Music Program’s roster of renowned guest artists includes jazz drummer Billy Cobham, band leader/baritone saxophonist James “Jabbo” Ware, Apollo Theater Musical Director Ray Chew, and multi-reed master James Carter.
