College Prep: Visual Arts Track

Curriculum

The College Prep Visual Arts track is designed to develop each student’s skills in various mediums and genres and to develop a body of work required for entrance into specialized high schools and colleges.

College Prep Visual Arts tuition: $1,213/28 weeks plus registration fee and other applicable fees.

Year 1: Introduction
• Painting & Drawing • Photography • Sculpture

Year 2-3: Intermediate
• Painting & Drawing • Photography • Sculpture
• 1 Required Elective

Year 4-6: Advanced
• Painting & Drawing • Photography • Sculpture
• Portfolio Development

Electives:
• Printmaking • Graphic/Web Design • Advanced Photo/Darkroom Techniques

Students entering into the College Prep Visual Arts program in the
6th grade must start with Year 1. Students entering into the College Prep Visual Arts program after the 6th grade are placed in the appropriate year based on portfolio review by Visual Arts Department director and faculty.

Interview Information

First Interview (Portfolio Review)
What to Bring:

  1. Portfolio of works in various media (charcoal, pencil, watercolor, acrylic, pen and ink) in subject matter from real life or imagination. No more than two cartoons are acceptable.
  2. Two letters of recommendation from current teachers (for entrance into specialized high schools, one letter should be from a visual arts teacher).
  3. Grades from three previous school terms.
  4. Students will also be asked to complete a still life drawing test onsite.
    All materials will be provided for this test.

The portfolio itself must be neat and presentable (red rope envelope or a professional portfolio—it need not be expensive).

Second Interview (Student and Parent)
A 10-minute interview with the student and a 10-minute interview with a parent will be scheduled.

Bring to the interview:
• At least three new art works.

All applicants will receive a notification letter stating their acceptance into the College Prep program. Students who are not accepted will be encouraged to take preliminary art classes to further enhance their education.
