Founded in 1964 our mission is to enrich the lives of children through exposure to and education in the arts. Today, HSA offers onsite instruction to children ages 4 through 18
from Harlem, Upper Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Westchester, New Jersey and Connecticut, and over 1,200 students in 17 New York City public schools through our unique arts-based in-school and after-school programs. |

Corporate Fundraising Officer/Grant Writer
Reporting to the Director of Development, the Corporate Fundraising Officer/Grant Writer will cultivate and expand HSA’s relationships with corporate donors and research and prepare fundraising proposals for corporations, foundations, and government sources to support a full range of HSA programs. The primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Develop a corporate fundraising strategy that reflects HSA’s business model and program areas of focus.
- Manage and increase HSA’s portfolio of major corporate donors to ensure a continuous revenue stream from this source.
- Conduct prospect research targeted to HSA’s current program and general operating needs.
- Draft letters of inquiry, proposals, and reports.
- Initiate and maintain communication with prospects and donors through telephone interaction, written correspondence and the coordination of site visits.
- Work with staff members at all levels to ensure that application deadlines are met, proposals are of the highest quality, and grantors expectations are fulfilled.
- Meet with senior staff to remain apprised of current and planned programmatic activities/events.
- Liaise with the Controller to develop proposal budgets.
- Prepare monthly activity reports and draft other internal reports as requested.
- Work with volunteers on special departmental activities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors’ degree; graduate degree preferred.
- At least five years fundraising experience with progressively increasing responsibilities; nonprofit experience is a plus.
- Excellent written, verbal, communication, time, and project management skills.
- Thorough knowledge of and experience with online fundraising research methods.
- Highly motivated, detail-oriented, organized, and able to work independently and collaboratively as a member of a team.
- Demonstrated success in fundraising.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel; knowledge of Raiser’s Edge is a plus.

Immediate Internships Available
The Harlem School of the Arts has an immediate need for unpaid and/or college credit interns in the Visual Arts, Dance, Music, and Development Departments. Reporting to the Directors of the respective departments, the responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Development Department
- Maintain Raisers Edge donor database.
- Draft and prepare donor acknowledgements, receipts, and invoices.
- Prepare and mail matching gift forms.
- Prepare monthly donor activity reports and pledge reports; generate reminder letters.
- Assist with the production of fundraising, donor cultivation and programmatic events.
Music Department
- Assisting the Music Program Director in the day-to-day operations of the department.
- Interacting with teaching artists, other Program Directors & Program Associates, parents and students.
- Manage all project and administrative aspects of the department.
- Assist in organizing departmental events, activities, and performances.
- Supervising the registration process.
- Involvement in institutional open houses and other community outreach efforts.
Visual Arts and Dance Departments:
- Interact with teaching artists, other Program Directors & Program Associates, parents and students.
- Organizing departmental events, activities, exhibits, and performances.
- Manage all project and administrative aspects of the department.
- Assist the Directors in the day-to-day operations of the department.
REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to commit to a minimum of three months and 10 to 20 hours per week.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of 1 year experience in the arts
- Excellent oral and written communications skills are a must
- Proficiency in Microsoft applications, particularly Word and Excel
- Exceptional organizational skills with attention to detail
- Ability to multi-task and manage several administrative tasks simultaneously
- Experience working with teaching artists, parents and students
- Development Intern only: Expertise in donor database management, Raiser’s Edge preferred
- Music, Visual Arts & Dance Intern only: Availability on Saturdays is preferred

ARTScape Summer Camp
HSA is currently recruiting for ARTScape, an arts-based summer camp for children between the ages of 4 and 17. We are seeking enthusiastic summer camp counselors with a background in the arts who also enjoy and are experienced in working with children. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- The oversight and group supervision of up to 15 children.
- Attention to campers’ safety, active participation in camp activities & projects, skill development, adherence to camp rules and policies, social adjustment, and the overall enjoyment of the camp’s activities & programs.
- Assist in the planning and administration of camp projects and activities.
- Manage children’s behavior and act as a role model by setting a good example.
- Work with the Camp Directors and other camp staff to handle various situations that may occur between and with campers.
- Keep a record of the daily attendance of the campers.
- Supervise and lead campers on field trips.
- Must be aware of all campers’ whereabouts at all times.
- Must be flexible and willing to pitch-in and contribute whenever necessary, including leading/teaching camp activities & projects and assisting other counselors with their assigned responsibilities.
- Greet campers and parents at the start of the day and at dismissal.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be a minimum of 16 years of age.
- A background/experience or education in the arts is preferred.
- Two years experience working with children of all ages and in a group setting.
- Able to work continuously from June 23 – August 15, 2008.
- Interest and experience in a camp environment or after-school program.
- Certified or willing to become certified in First Aid and CPR.
- Enjoy working in both indoor and outdoor settings.
- Must have a physical examination within one year of the start of camp including a tuberculin test.
- Ability to work as a team member with other counselors and adult staff members.
- Responsible, friendly, patient, creative, and willing to learn.
- Available to participate in mandatory counselor orientation and training.
- Ability to take charge and to motivate others.
