Taking Classes at HSA

The Harlem School of the Arts (HSA) offers group classes and private lessons in four core artistic disciplines: dance, music, theater and the
visual arts.

The atmosphere at HSA is lively as students of all ages and levels of proficiency explore a variety of styles, genres and expression through movement, voice, their own original scripts and songs, a variety of instruments, digital photography, video and the mediums of traditional drawing, painting and sculpture.

Open Enrollment courses provide year-round beginning to advanced instruction for preschool, elementary, high school and adult students in group settings and one-on-one private lessons. Select the classes that interest your children and yourselves and encourage them to proceed at their own pace while gaining knowledge, experience and mastery of a new subject. HSA encourages students to explore a variety of disciplines simultaneously.
The College Prep program, for youth ages 12 to 18, prepares students for admission to specialized New York City arts high schools, including LaGuardia School for the Performing Arts and Professional Performing Arts
High School, through a graduated curriculum in dance, music, theater or visual arts. Students are required to pass an audition, maintain a B average in their academic work and show artistic promise and discipline. College
Prep
graduates have advanced to accredited universities nationwide including The Boston Conservatory, Harvard, Juilliard and NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.

Faculty and Facilities

HSA’s distinguished and dedicated faculty members perform and train professionally, providing accomplished role models for our students. Faculty bios follow the course listings within each of the four arts disciplines.

Dance facilities include three spacious professional studios with appropriate flooring, mirrors and barres. A digital media lab with multiple work stations and a photo darkroom are available to Visual Arts students. Music classes take place in well-equipped studios with a variety of instruments available for rental. Students have the rare opportunity to present their work and performances in the 137-seat HSA Theater, adjacent to the primary facility. Each department holds a minimum of three performances and exhibitions during the Fall and Spring semesters.

Financial Assistance

HSA provides a broad range of financial assistance to eligible students including merit scholarships, partial tuition grants, family discounts and work-study awards.
