ARTScape Summer Arts Camp

The Harlem School of the Arts offers the ARTScape Summer Arts Camp for children ages 4-11, as well as Teen Arts instruction for middle school and high school students who are preparing for college. Private lessons in voice and all musical instruments are also offered for children, teens and adults.

Registration for returning students begins Saturday, March 1st!
General registration opens to all:

  • Wednesday – Friday, March 5–7, 3:00pm–7:00pm
  • Saturday, March 8th, 10:00am–5:00pm
Summer Session
Classes: July 7 – August 15, 2008
  • Full Day: Monday–Friday (8:30am–5:30pm)
  • Half Day: Monday–Thursday (8:30am–12:00pm)
  • Optional Morning Extended Care: Mon–Fri (7:30am–8:30am)
  • Optional Evening Extended Care: Mon–Fri (5:30pm–6:30pm)

Programs

Wee Arts (ages 4–7) and Crescendo (ages 8–11)

Choose age–appropriate classes in dance, music, theater, and visual arts. Classes are held from 9:00am–12:00pm, followed by lunch. Full–day campers also take part in daily recreational activities at nearby parks and pools and participate in field trips citywide.
Wee Arts students can select from classes in visual arts, creative dance, percussion, pre-instrument, chorus, acting, piano and strings.
Crescendo students can select from classes in visual arts, acting, guitar, percussion, photography, music theory, ballet, chorus, ethnic dance, modern dance, hip-hop dance, piano, strings and woodwind.


Teen Arts Summer Arts Day Camp (ages 12–16)

The Harlem School of the Arts offers the Teen Arts Summer Camp for teens
daily. This full-day program includes film-making, photography and field
trips in the morning.

Teen Arts 2008 Schedule of Classes

  1. Hip-Hop Dance – Fundamentals of stylized popular dance
  2. African and Latin Percussion – Percussion hand patterns and rhythmic structures from West Africa, Cuba and the Caribbean Islands
  3. Teen Acting – Vocal and physical exercises, improvisational scenes, and ensemble work
  4. Mixed Media Workshop – Introduction to painting and drawing using a variety of traditional and non-traditional art materials and innovative techniques
  5. Toons – Traditional cartooning styles as well as an exploration of digital manipulation and anime
  6. Graphics and Web Design – File formats, text design, how to merge imagery with graphics, Photoshop, Dreamweaver and Flash

College Prep Summer Academy (ages 12–18)
Monday–Friday, 1:00–6:00pm

The Harlem School of the Arts offers the College Prep Summer Academy for students ages 12–18, daily from 1:00pm–6:00pm. Admission to this advanced program is by audition or portfolio review. College Prep is for students who demonstrate an advanced level of performance or creative skill, allowing them to focus on one discipline (music, dance, theater or visual arts). The program combines intensive arts experiences with stimulating cultural exposure.

Private Music Instruction for Children, Teens and Adults
Available from 1:00pm – 6:45pm in 30, 45 and 60 minute sessions.

Instruction is offered in voice (ages 14 and older) and all instruments for children and adults. Private lessons are one lesson per week for six weeks. Students enrolled in the Full Day Camp, if interested, are encouraged to sign up for Private Music Instruction after 5:30pm.

Note:
Students who do not own instruments can rent one from HSA for $75 for a take-home rental or $30 to rent in-school only. A $25 refundable deposit is also required.

ARTScape Summer Camp Fees

Wee Arts, Crescendo and Teen Arts Programs:
$970 for Half-Day Session
$1,800 for Full-Day Session
$300 for Extended Morning Care
$300 for Extended Evening Care

Some selected classes require materials or costume fees ($30–$35 per class), please refer to the registration form for these details.

Field Trip Fees for Half-Day Students:
(field trips are included in full-day tuition)
$180 Friday Half-Day Trips for campers age 8 and older
$60 Trip to Great Adventure

College Prep Program
$970 for Half-Day Session

Private Music Instruction
$360 for 1 hour lesson
$270 for 45 minute lesson
$180 for 30 minute lesson

$75 for a take-home instrument rental
$30 for an in-school instrument rental

HSA Registration Fee:
$35 for new students
$30 for returning students

Late Registration will require an additional $15.00 fee.

Payment Schedule:
Due upon registration: 25% of tuition and 100% fees
Due April 12: 25% of tuition
Due May 10: 25% of tuition
Final payment by June 14 (remaining 25% of tuition)

Refund Policy:
If registration is withdrawn before July 6th, 100% of tuition and fees will be refunded less the registration fee.
If registration is withdrawn after July 9th, 25% of tuition and fees will be refunded.

Read Carefully:

  • Students enrolled in ARTScape's full-day program are required to wear HSA T-shirts while at camp.
  • All ARTScape students are eligible for free lunches provided by the USDA through the NYC Department of Education School Food.
  • Medical Forms and Emergency Data Sheets must be received by
    June 16. Download Medical Form here.
  • No camper will be allowed to start camp without a current (September 2006 or later) Medical Form signed by a physician and the parent or guardian.
